Finally, some movement in the rankings.
Last Friday three teams in my Class A and AA top fives lost, previously unbeaten Washington County tumbled in AAA, and two of my AAAAA top 10 went down. That may not sound like too terribly much, but at the iceberg's pace change has come at during the latter half of this season, this is utter upheaval.
My votes and notes are below. The official poll is here.
Class A
1. Emanuel County Institute
2. Wilcox County
3. Clinch County
4. Lincoln County
5. Brookstone
6. Bowdon
7. Turner County
8. Savannah Christian
9. Bremen
10. Wesleyan
NOTE: Somebody other than Commerce finally knocked Athens Academy off its 8-A perch. Wesleyan's win was enough to bump the Wolves into the top 10 in my book and therefore enough to drop AA out. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the Spartans deep in the postseason again this year, but this late in the season, if you beat a team head-to-head, that should usually be enough to get you a better ranking in my opinion. Wesleyan has a couple of bad - but close - losses early in the season. But improvement over the course of season is a very real phenomenon in high school football, so I'll give greater weight to what happens during these last few weeks
Class AA
1. Buford
2. Pepperell
3. McIntosh County Academy
4. Charlton County
5. Brooks County
6. Fitzgerald
7. Jefferson
8. Appling County
9. Henry County
10. Dublin
NOTE: My No. 2 (Fitz) and No. 4 (Appling Co.) both went down last week, and Buford was within an eyelash of joining them. But the Wolves held on, and by this point in the season, no blood, no foul, the way I see it. Early in the year a near-loss to an unranked opponent might be enough to cost a team, but this deep into the region schedule, survival's the name of the game. Buford could get tested again this week when the Wolves travel to Westminster (my No. 11 team in AA).
Class AAA
1. Cairo
2. Baldwin
3. Dunwoody
4. LaGrange
5. Carver-Columbus
6. St. Pius X
7. Gainesville
8. Jackson
9. Carrollton
10. Peach County
NOTE: Things here are pretty settled, with only WaCo losing last week. I almost bumped Flowery Branch back in for the first time since the Falcons' Week 1 loss to Stephens County, but Peach gets the vote thanks to a brutal schedule. FB remains at No. 11 for me, but the Falcons epitomize that week-to-week improvement cited earlier. The 7-AAA championship game at City Park in two weeks has the makings of a classic.
Speaking of big games, Baldwin gets WaCo this week and LaGrange takes on Carver-Columbus. Good stuff.
Class AAAA
1. Westside-Macon
2. Statesboro
3. Sandy Creek
4. Marist
5. Thomas County Central
6. Tucker
7. Rome
8. Sequoyah
9. Evans
10. North Clayton
NOTE: Only Southwest DeKalb's loss provides any change here. They're replaced at No. 10 by North Clayton, mostly because I still can't make heads or tails of what's going on in Region 8-AAAA. Clarke Central and Loganville are both one-loss teams, but trying to sort any meaning out of who's beaten who (much less by how much) in that region is futile.
Class AAAAA
1. Lowndes
2. Camden County
3. Northside-Warner Robins
4. Newnan
5. Grayson
6. North Gwinnett
7. Coffee
8. Kell
9. Stephenson
10. Walton
NOTE: I'm really anxious to see what happens when these guys get to the playoffs. Lots of good teams here, with very little separation. And if recent history has taught us anything, it's that Class AAAAA is the hardest to predict in the postseason.
