Country escape: Summer

I've always hated the heat of summer. Even when I was in school and summer meant no teachers and homework, I dreaded the summer. But fresh blueberries might make it worth it. We didn't have a farmers market when I was growing up, not one I remember anyway. Now the one in Suwanee is bustling every Saturday. I was down there again this weekend and bought some heirloom tomatoes, green beans, honey and grapes. Lots of tables had blueberries but I passed on them knowing that I still had some I'd bought at the Dahlonega farmers market last weekend. Today, a woman was selling blueberries in the parking lot after church. I think she was selling them anyway, I didn't ask, knowing I still had those blueberries from Dahlonega. On the way home from church, my husband and I stopped to talk to the guy who sells ground cornmeal and boiled peanuts on the side of Ga. 400 in northern Dawson County. We're doing a story on roadside stands in the Harvest guide (which will come out on a Sunday sometime in the near future). So I wanted to get his story. After talking to him in the shade of his open air trailer we decided to buy some boiled peanuts and cornmeal. And he had to-go cups full of blueberries. I decided I couldn't pass them up anymore. I'll just have to make a lot of blueberry muffins and maybe I'll try putting them in some homemade granola bars. And maybe I'll freeze some to use in some smoothies. His story will be in that Harvest guide, but I'll tell you a little bit now. He grinds his cornmeal in a mill his grandfather bought in 1929. The company that made it is still in business so he can buy parts if he needs them. Also, all the money he makes goes to his granddaughter's college fund. She's 13 and wants to be a veterinarian. Well, I'm off to make some blueberry something other.

Recently, I opened a plastic container of spinach and noticed that the packaging claimed to be made 100 percent from corn. With a little research, I found out this is growing in popularity.

Granola bars are a great snack, but the ones you buy in the store inevitably have way more junk in them than necessary (aka high fructose corn syrup, enriched flour instead of whole-wheat flour,...
