Country escape: Horses

I love driving by pastures with cows and horses. They're so pretty. Sometimes on my way to work I can even see little calves nursing. But I don't have much experience with cows or horses up close. This week I got up close with some horses. I went out with Life Editor Kristen and her 1-year-old Sofia to meet a farrier north of Murrayville, near the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve. Before we decided to do an article on a farrier, I had never heard of one before. Obviously, I knew someone had to make and put the shoes on the horse, I just didn't know they had a special name. It was a learning experience for Sofia, but for me, too. I took pictures while he hammered the horseshoe, and when he put it on the hoof it smoked everywhere. The horse just stood there casually hangin' out for the whole thing. My camera flash didn't seem to bother him at all. He may have been a bit annoyed when I took this straight on shot of his face, but he was still pretty calm. I hope one day in the fall I can go riding with some friends. Of course, I'll have to pay someone some money and I'll only get to ride for about an hour (or pay more money). But at least there are places nearby I can do it. In fact, there's a horse riding place no more than five miles from my house. Whether I get to ride them or not, I'm glad there are people who are willing to do all the work to keep horses and pretty pastures. At least I can admire them from afar. Look for our story about the farrier on Monday.
