'Idol' chatter: Finale part 1

Round 1

Well it took 15 minutes to get to any singing in this finale of a singing competition, but finally it got started with David Cook's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." It was a great start for Cook. I wish we'd had less boxing analogy silliness and a longer performance. The song worked in that amount of time, but I'd love to hear more of it.

David Archuleta is also off to a very strong start. That was a great song for him and he sang it beautifully. I'm not a huge Archuleta fan, but his "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" was incredible. The judges are right, that's one of the best performances of the season. He might have even won round 1, like Simon said, as much as it hurts for me to say that.

Round 2

Cook sounded pretty good on "Dream Big," one of the wins in the songwriting contest. It might have been better if he dropped the key down a bit. The chorus was a bit strained; he hit the high notes, but it might have better with less strain. The song was OK. His performance was a good bit better than OK.

"In This Moment" was a better song, but still not a great one. Archuleta did a good job with it; it was a little too gushy for my taste, if you know what I mean. But that probably plays perfectly to Archuleta's fans. I'm not sure round 2 went to him, like Simon said.

Round 3

"The World I Know" was my favorite from Cook tonight. It was a great choice on his part (despite what Simon said), and he did an incredible job with it. It showed his voice off really well, and he changed things up enough to make it his own, like always, and it was great. I'm glad he didn't do a song he's already done. That's a bit lazy to me.

Archuleta did pick a song he's done already, "Imagine." Of course it is an amazing song and his performance was great the first time. It was just as great this time.

I think Archuleta has probably secured the title. Cook is absolutely amazing, too, and it really hurts me to predict Archuleta as the winner. But Archuleta did better than Cook tonight. I personally don't like his style as much, and I wouldn't call it a knockout, but Archuleta's won this competition. I still think Cook will sell way better than Archuleta post-Idol.
