In past years it's always been good when the judges and producers pick the songs. They know more songs than the contestants and therefore have a wider range to pick the perfect song from. I don't know if there was anything as spectacular as Katherine McPhee's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" from a couple years ago, that was sung this week. But everything was good. And some of it was pretty great.
David Archuleta did very well on his first song, picked by Paula. Simon was right, though, it wasn't surprisingly good, just good like David always does.
On David's second song, he went with something a lot younger. I'm glad he tried it, but it just wasn't quite right. He can't pull that kind of sound off. I don't think his voice is really right for a huge pop hit on the radio. You don't see the adorable little guy and his personality when you hear him on the radio. I really don't see him being that successful with it post-Idol. He might could come out with a couple ballads, but that's it. He'd sell some music, but not a whole lot.
David's last song, picked by the producers, was another really pretty song from David. I think Simon called the song "gooey," that's definitely accurate.
Syehsa singing Alicia Keyes wasn't that great. It seemed a little old-fashioned in the beginning to me, and the rest was just predictable.
Syesha chose "Fever" for her second performance. The judges all commented that it was an interesting choice for her, and it didn't show what kind of artist she would be. I think she wants to be on Broadway, not the radio. So it showed exactly what kind of artist she would be. It was a great performance and I hope it gets her on Broadway.
Syesha's last performance was the best of the three. I think it combined the contemporary feel with a little acting/attitude thrown in. I could see her doing a song like that for the radio. I think Simon was right, though -- it wasn't any defining moment for her. And if she wanted to be in the finale, she needed a defining moment.
"The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face" was a hard song to sing, but David Cook did it well. I don't know if I'd call it one of his best performances to date, like Simon (who chose the song) did. But I don't really know the song.
"Dare You To Move" on the otherhand, I do know. I love Switchfoot. I love David Cook. The song was an excellent, excellent choice. My only complaint is that it was way too short. Paula was right, it sounded like he was just getting started by the time it ended. I think he probably did get a little pitchy, like Randy said, because he got a little too into the song, maybe. I still loved it. I am a huge Switchfoot fan, though, so I am completely biased.
"I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" was an great choice from the producers. It had all the emotion to make it a perfect end to the night. And David made it perfect. It didn't need to be changed too much, though apparently Randy wanted him to do something else with it. I think Randy's silly. It was great.
What do you think? Will it be David vs. David in the finale? Who do you think will be most successful after Idol? Share your thoughts by commenting on this blog.
