With the supposed most talented group of contestants ever, I guess the producers decided they'd try to throw something really tough at them and see what happened. Andrew Lloyd Webber songs proved to be quite a challenge.
A lot of the performances fell pretty flat, but a few were good. I'm really not sure how America is going to react to those songs. There's a reason you don't hear Broadway songs on the radio. They just don't really work in that format; they're meant to work within the context of a larger play. That makes judging more difficult. I think the contestants needed to pick a song that could work OK on its own in order to make it work in a more popular format.
Jason Castro and Brooke had a really rough night. One of them will go home.
I think Syesha would rather be on Broadway than the radio. She looked like she had a lot of fun, and I kind of wonder if she really wants to win Idol. She'd be better off losing so she can pursue Broadway.
Poor Jason Castro. He really has no excuse for not knowing a cat sings "Memory." He really shouldn't have admitted that. I thought he sang it OK; it was pretty and had a lot of emotion in it. I don't think he was as bad as the judges said, but at this point he needed to do better.
Brooke's mess up at the beginning is going to cost her some votes. I think the song choice may cost her more votes. It was a difficult song to sing, and I don't think it's a song most people in America are going to connect with and fall in love with. It might work within a play, but on the American Idol stage, it just seemed out of place. I would like her to make it a couple more weeks, but that performance may be it for her.
David Archuletta did what everyone should have done tonight. He made the song work in a popular format. I know it's Andrew Lloyd Webber night, but it's still American Idol. It needs to be a song that can work on the radio. It was a slightly forgettable ballad, though.
Carly did really well. I guess it did get a bit "shouty," but especially compared to other performances tonight, she did a great job. It had a lot of energy and was enjoyable.
Even on Andrew Lloyd Webber night, David Cook was unbelievable. I expected him to pick a song with some rock influence, similar to the one Carly picked, but he actually chose a song where he just straight up sang it well. It didn't have any rock twist on it, but I think that proved he can sing anything. It had some really great moments, and though it wasn't my favorite performance by him, I like that he proved he can sing more than rock.
