I'd LIKE to participate in Earth Day by using my bicycle to commute to school. Unfortunately, this will not happen due to the lack of shoulder to ride on for the first 2 miles of my journey from Flowery Branch to Lanier Tech. I'd love to do my part for the environment, but I don't want to risk getting killed by a driver who is angry because a bicyclist is "getting in thier way", which seems to be the prevailing attitude of most drivers in the area. Not all, but most...and it only takes one to sideswipe you with a mirror, knock you into a ditch and possibly cause serious injury.
The best I can hop for is to cut class and bmake it a car free day.
We can try to walk or ride a bicycle to work, but will that change anything.? No, I think we have been eating our own trash for years. Every thing we dump in the ocean, will come back to us,and already has.
Earth Day isn't just a bunch of hype. Rather it is a day to begin putting ourselves in balance with our surroundings.
While it is true that one person by themselves may not make a difference in how our environment reacts, together we can have a cumulative effect by doing little things individually.
As for me, I am trying to do a bit more than I have been doing alrighty. There is an Unity in Community Environmental Fair this Saturday at the Unity Church in Gainesville. I am hoping to learn how to better fit into the environment than I have by being open to new ideas that won't have such a harsh impact.
