Georgia is dead last. Again

Coppermine hit a blogging home rum with his headline:

Government out of Touch.

I can't top that. I might not agree with his reasons but that headline breaks my heart because it's true.

Another heart breaking truth hit our state and by extension, our county.

Georgia is dead last in financial security. Dead last. What a double meaning for the topic.

We have more bankruptcies than any other state.

We lead in bank failures.

We're second in households without a checking or savings account.

The leading cause of bankruptcy remains doctor bills. With Georgia not only fighting Obama's legal right to be on the 2012 ballot, the federal health care overhaul, and Medicaid, a middle class family isn't much more than an emergency room visit away from losing their home.

How's life expectancy in Georgia? Less than in some Third World countries and 43rd worst in the United States. We're 3rd in tuberculosis, hepatitis, and AIDS. Median life expectancy? 73.9 years. Lower than in Mexico or Cuba or Libya.

People born and living in Georgia might live longer in the war torn West Bank of the Middle East where 75% of the population is Muslim.

Yes, the government is out of touch with us. But, we are out of touch with ourselves.

We are Dead Last. What a label.

Spelling Nazism aside, I want to point out that Georgia does have at least one 'first place' to brag about. In a recent investigation carried out by The Center for Public Integrity, Georgia came in dead last in terms of corruption. I choose to look on the bright side: Georgia came in first! We have the most corrupt state government in the country. We're #1! Way to go!

If we can't be second, let's be first in something we control.

Ignorance of the law

Attending the Board of Commission meetings and work sessions could almost be funny if it wasn't so tragic. High light reel. The BOC didn't know that the BoA (Bank of America) refused to extend their letter of credit on the Spout Springs sewer debt. OPS! Let's knee jerk react to ...

That illegal dump and the rezoning request
November 13, 2012
Make no mistake. There is an illegal 'composting' operation off Monroe Drive near U.S. 129/Athens Highway. The owner does not have a permit to accept compost or to operate a 'compost process.' Let's shut it down before giving that criminal more rights. Too late. The County Commission has ignored the ...

Chemo Treatment Poem

So many lose their hair during chemo. Here's a poem for that. My Hair! My Hair! It used to be here, Covering my ears. Now it is there, Layered on the chair. If you love me, and you still care. Then you'll never stare At the spots that are bare. ...

Nightmares
