Burning issues in education

Education is at a crossroads in Georgia and both your pocketbook and children's education are at stake.
For starters, state lawmakers are considering at least a half-dozen bills that concern the funding of education.
One of those bills is the much-debated plan to eliminate property taxes in favor of sales taxes.
Lawmakers are looking at expanding the lottery-funded pre-kindergarten program to 3-year-olds.
And then there are rising standards taking place this year per the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
The law is up for reauthorization, but most pundits believe the much-needed changes that need to occur -- such as measuring progress based on individual students' academic growth -- won't happen in an election year or even in the first year of a new president's term.
Gainesville City Board of Education member Kelvin Simmons said this week that he wants to keep his dream alive of quality education for all children.
He said that just as board members have wrestled with an issue that has very little to do with high graduation rates, safe schools and other crucial matters -- who should serve as board chairman.
Simmons called their indecision a "shame" and added that they needed to "put our differences behind us."

Mr. Gill, as the education reporter for the paper, why are you not reporting on the obvious mess at the central office instead of ignoring it?

Mr. Gill has very close relations with someone in the Hall County School System. Therefore, it might be construed as a conflict of interest for him.

Jeff,
Could you at least tell us how many central office employees there were and total money paid before this superintendent? Then could you tell us how many central office folks have been added, if any, and the current totals for salaries? I think this should include all the public positions that are listed on their website along with folks on special assignment, administrative interns, and consultants. This info might paint a clearer picture. It seems like the taxpayers in this county need no-spin facts.

Here is the website to view all educator salaries and supplements in the State; however, the data is always 1 year behind the current FY.
