HS football: Poll talk, Week 3

Take Me To Post Comment Form

Running behind this week; let's just say four-day work weeks don't hold the same charm in this industry as they might in yours.

Let's get right to the rankings.

Official AP results here. My votes are below.

And follow me on Twitter. It's for your own good.

Class A

Rank, team, previous

1.  Wilcox County (1)
2. Wesleyan (2)
3. Savannah Christian (3)
4. Charlton County (4)
5. Clinch County (5)
6. Johnson County (6)
7. Lincoln County (8)
8. Eagle's Landing Christian (9)
9. Holy Innocents' (10)
10. Aquinas (-)

Keep an eye on: George Walton. The defending GISA Class AAA state champ has only played one game since stepping up to GHSA. They won, but the schedule's a smooth one for the first month. We won't get a true glimpse of where the Bulldogs stand until they meet Athens Academy. The winner of that game will be in position to battle Commerce for the top spot in 8-A. The Tigers are 0-2, but they've been "good losses," if there are such a thing - Jefferson 17-14; Franklin County 31-28.

Class AA

1. Carver-Columbus (1)
2. Buford (2)
3. Calhoun (3)
4. Callaway (4)
5. Cook (5)
6. Jefferson County (6)
7. Fitzgerald (8)
8. Dublin (9)
9. Thomasville (10)
10. Westminster (6)

Keep an eye on: Region 8-AA. The whole thing is a mess. For top 10 purposes, only the South subregion is worth mentioning at this juncture, and it's nigh impossible to decipher anything of meaning from the first two weeks. Jefferson, Hart County, Elbert County, East Jackson and North Oconee are all potential region champs and therefore worthy of low-end consideration here. But more dust will have to settle before we can see anything clearly.

Class AAA

1. Sandy Creek (1)
2. Peach County (2)
3. Westside-Macon (3)
4. Cairo (4)
5. Baldwin (6)
6. Carrollton (8)
7. Worth County (9)
8. North Hall (10)
9. Cartersville (-)
10. St. Pius X (-)

Keep an eye on: Washington County vs. Thomson. I dropped WaCo out after a tie and a loss in the first two weeks, but their opponents -- Jefferson County and Statesboro -- are exceeding preseason expectations. Thomson is 2-0 with a pair of quality wins. Their meeting Friday should be a measuring stick for both.

Class AAAA

1. Northside-Warner Robins (1)
2. Griffin (2)
3. Clarke Central (3)
4. Tucker (4)
5. Thomas County Central (5)
6. Kell (6)
7. Hiram (9)
8. Marist (7)
9. Apalachee (10)
10. Flowery Branch (-)

Keep an eye on: North Clayton. Won first two games by a total of 70-0. Even against weak competition, that's solid.

Class AAAAA

1. Camden County (1)
2. North Gwinnett (4)
3. Stephenson (3)
4. Newnan (5)
5. Peachtree Ridge (6)
6. Valdosta (7)
7. Woodstock (9)
8. McEachern (10)
9. Lowndes (2)
10. Brookwood (-)

Keep an eye on: Grayson. That 13-10 loss to Kell in Week 1 may not be such a big deal after all. The Class AAAA Longhorns have knocked off teams in my Class AAAAA top 10 two weeks in a row and could make it a trifecta this week against Woodstock.

HS football: Poll talk, Week 11
November 03, 2010
You're not going to find a link to this week's AP poll here. It's still posted elsewhere on this site, and for the time being it's still what we're using as the "official" state rankings, but I'm not going to bring any further attention to it, because, frankly, it's a ...

HS football: Poll talk, Week 10
October 27, 2010
There's still two weeks left in the regular season, but for most teams in Northeast Georgia, this Friday marks the end of the subregion schedule. For those teams, or at least for the ones in their division's top three, the playoffs start next week. In the meantime, there's still plenty left to ...

They're 6-1, undefeated in their subregion, and they trailed the No. 7 team in the state by only three points deep into the fourth quarter. So why can't the White County Warriors get any respect? To be fair, the Warriors aren't that far from top-10 recognition; they fell just one spot outside ...

HS football: Poll talk, Week 8
October 13, 2010
It feels like I've been saying this a lot lately, but this Friday brings a pivotal slate of games in Northeast Georgia -- for area teams in and just outside of the state's top 10 rankings, and for the much more important region standings. The matchups are especially intriguing in 8-AAA, ...

HS football: Poll talk, Week 7

It didn't take as long as I thought it would for Gainesville to make its return to the Georgia Prep Football Top 10.The ninth-ranked Red Elephants began the year at No. 6, based largely on the fact that they finished last season at No. 2. Their massive losses on both ...
