The American Nurses Association supports the current healthcare reform efforts and has created a website with a tool kit for nurses.

Link to the nurses tool kit.

The kit includes the follow letter to be sent to each Congressman.

The Letter:

"I am writing to request that you support health care reform legislation that includes a strong public plan and guarantees quality, affordable health care for everyone. As one of the nation’s 2.9 million nurses, I see firsthand how important access to affordable quality health care is. As the number of uninsured Americans continues to grow at an alarming rate, the only place the uninsured can get treated is in the emergency room, which is often the most expensive form of immediate care. This creates a huge strain on the health care system and its providers.

Now is the time for health care reform. I share the American Nurses Association’s belief that in order to meet our nation’s health care needs we must have an integrated and well resourced national healthcare workforce policy, a system that focuses on wellness and prevention, and a high-quality public insurance option that complements and competes fairly with options offered by private insurers.

I believe that health care reform must happen this year and I join the ANA in their push for meaningful health care reform that includes a strong public option. I look forward to your reply."

I agree. It is saddening that the greatest nation this planet has ever know can't even provide a decent standard of care for those less fortunate. It is, IMO, a scandal and a shame.

Clara Barton is a famous nurse but she is associated with the American Red Cross.

The American Nurses Association was founded in 1896

Isabel Adams Hampton Robb was the first president of the American Nurses Association.

Many drug companies and lobbyists support the new healthcare plan. Does that mean they could profit somehow?

For me it's not so much an issue of who profits, but of getting decent care to folks who need it.

I fully agree doctors and such should receive a decent compensation for decent medical care.

Thanks Barrycdog,

I was just putting a face to Nurses. Clara seemed more universal. But, you're right.

Joey,

I studied Australia in college. The Aussies have a law very similar to the section being proposed here on the subject of drug company profits.

The down under has a medical care program for everyone in the country including visitors. To control drug costs, new drugs cannot be imported to added to the system unless the new drugs can demostrate improved care or less cost.

Before Bush took office that eliminated most if not all American drug companies from the Aussie system.

However, Australia produces a lot of sugar. Our raw sugar prices are three times higher than world prices, partly to support domestic production. We have a very low quota system for importing sugar, especially from the Aussies.

Bush withdrew our ambassador to the AU. Refused to appoint another. Among the items of dispute, drugs. The US wanted a share of the market in the down under.

We gave the AU a larger share of sugar imports in exchange for the lifting of restrictions on drugs.

So, we could control drug profits by not allowing the introduction of more expensive drugs in the system. Often a a generic drug is being replaced by a new and improved 'brand name' drug. The chemical change is usually nothing more than a filler material, sugar in some cases. But, the drug company can file a new patent on the brand name, stop producing the generic... etc etc etc...

That does need to be stopped. The only thing that will stop it is the weight of law.

I don't have much detail on this story that broke in the AJC. MY Congressman Nathan Deal has been getting rich while holding public office. No big shock. Most political hacks get richer in office. Here's a sample post from a lefty blog of the emerging allegations of unethical, insider ...

I'm never sure how to spell healthcare. Is it one word or two? Whichever it might be, I'm reminded of some lessons from my days in sports. Our little town only had one "gym" and it wasn't Gold's Gym. The gym was named "The Pit" and it was run by ...
