Bravo! That was a fine piece of writing. Entertaining, informative and funny too.
Don't forget, your right to express yourself here is protected by the First Amendment to the constitution.
If we are going to celebrate the benefits of government, let's not overlook the Constitutional guarantees that are still intact.
Ontime:
I count approximately 16 separate categories of human interaction with government reflected in your post as glowing examples of government regulatory success.
I also count 2 categories (medical and insurance) which you include by inference as relevant to the discussion.
Since these two industries are also heavily regulated by myriad levels of government, I can only conclude that you are citing these as government regulatory failures.
Perhaps your point is 16 out of 18 ain’t bad?
I’m inclined to agree with you.—J.G.
Of course when Hurricane Katrina hit and when you needed the government most, I wonder how much faith you will put into the same while surrounded by ocean.
If you were living off Social Security that you paid in all your life and still cant make ends meet.
Could you imagine doing without all those wonderful programs. Email and fax machines are having an effect on the post office. The cost of fuel is forcing us to find alternate transportation. The weather service is great but I rely on looking out the window for a better prediction and my cat can do a better job. If the USDA and FDA is doing a great job why are tomato's, spinach, lettuce and meats having so much trouble affecting farming industry with some accusations not even based on fact. The EPA, Federal Reserve, and other entities you listed all have their short comings. Its all a part of a larger burecracy that has grown seperate from the government.
I wonder what it would be like to do without these services for a month, a week or maybe a year? How much of the deficit could be paid off if they took a furlough? Do you trust the government with you health and well being? They allow the cigarette and alcohol industry to continue unabated. Doesn't these two vices kill many people. What about some other things brought to us from the government like Agent Orange, the levees in Louisiana, The current water war between Georgia, Florida and Alabama... Although you may put your faith in der government I have my reservations. The ability to look carefully at what someone is pushing you towards is a good thing.
John,
I think the author's point was that we ignore what we do get from the government's preventions. Sadly, the government comes in after the abuses and can only prevent similar future abuses.
Thanks.
