The judges picked one song and the contestants picked one song. And the contestants actually did a better job picking songs for themselves. All three of these guys are extremely talented, put their own spin on songs and have personality, too. It's one tight race this season.

Danny Gokey

Paula's choice, "Dance, Little Sister," was not my favorite. Not my style, but he had fun with it. He always has a lot of energy on the upbeat songs, but I never really like them.

Now the ballads, I usually love. "You are So Beautiful" was no exception. His tone sounds exceptional on such a slow song. And then it sounded incredible on the climax, too. It was a perfect song choice when it matters the most.

Kris Allen

As far as judges choices go, "Apologize" is more my speed. However, Kara was right, he didn't do anything with it. It sounded like a great performance of Kris singing someone else's song. But he didn't make it his own. I understand her disappointment, but I still enjoyed it.

Kris did his own thing with Kanye West's "Heartless," though. The almost a capella intro was great. And I really loved that it was just Kris and his guitar. I love that acoustic sound, and it really shows his guts/confidence to get up their in such a stripped down performance. The simple one-man arrangement shows off his talent both with the guitar and with his beautiful voice. Every contestant tonight has really got to fight to be in the finals. I think Kris put up a great fight, and I hope it's enough.

Adam Lambert

"One" is one of my favorite songs. Adam made it his own, and it worked. I prefer the U2 version, but for an Adam-style version it was very good. I still love the soft vocals from him and not the climaxes, but he is undoubtedly good.

Adam made a great choice with "Cryin'." I don't mind the high pitched climaxes as much on rock 'n' roll songs. They fit a little better, I guess. Still not my favorite, but it works.

My votes and predictions

Again, my vote goes to Kris. I love his voice and his style, and he did great on his song choice. As far as who will be in the finals, I think it's anybody's game. Danny's first song was forgetable, though the second was very good. The same goes for Kris, but his second song was amazing. Adam was great both times, but his style is so specific, I don't know if he'll get the majority vote. Then again, maybe Allison's rocker fans will switch over and vote for Adam now. As I think I said last week, at this point it really comes down to musical style and personality. Every contestant can sing. I'm curious what others think. Share your thoughts about who the final two will be.

Idol Chatter: Finale part 1
May 19, 2009
Tonight was a bit disappointing. For such amazing contestants, the songs were just OK. And the song that will be a single? Better than those written by new songwriters as in past Idol finales, but still lame. And it's ridiculous fit for Adam. I don't know why they didn't write ...
