BIO: I've been covering health care and the environment for The Times since 1999. Prior to that, I covered the same beats for The Memphis Flyer, an alternative newsweekly, for 11 years,and also worked for Memphis Magazine. From 1978 to 1988 I was a freelance writer. I've also taught writing at the University of Memphis, where I earned bachelor's and master's degrees in science.

Off the job, I have been an avid hiker since 1984, and for 10 years was Memphis chapter chairperson of the Tennessee Trails Association. My other interests include music, photography, and training dogs.
